A better way for podiatry patients
Billing is transparent here
The old way with insurance
With insurance, you and the physician are all captive to your insurance coverage. Patients don't know what they will be billed for making it impossible to know beforehand if services will be covered.
Billing errors, copays, deductibles, and surprise bills make for a poor patient experience.

Direct Care Billing
We happily (and intentionally!) do not contract with insurance. Insurance companies put restraints on patient care that doctors could otherwise deliver. By not contracting with them, treatment can be personalized and non-biased.
Contracted insurance rates for care are inflated. By not taking insurance, we can offer fair prices directly to our patients.
Importantly, Mullin Podiatry offers price transparency. You know exactly what services will cost
before being treated.
Our patients pay us upfront. We never bill through insurance. Here is one reason why:
Any family doctor in the Twin Cities can offer an ingrown toenail removal.
First, we tell family and friends to have a podiatrist remove your nail. We just have more experience with the care and treatment. And while most of us default to providing our insurance information upfront at traditional clinics, most of us know that a bill still shows up in the mail 4-6 weeks later. Below is a very reasonable example of what you pay when you bill insurance versus just paying upfront.

Do I need a referral to see you?
Never. Referrals are an insurance requirement. Since we don't contract with insurance companies, you're free to make an appointment on your own!
I didn’t realize a Doctor’s office didn’t need to accept insurance. Why are you not accepting insurance?
Insurance places restrictions on patients and providers on what care is able to be provided. Insurance takes away personalized service for patients. Ultimately, opting out is an obvious choice if I want to (a) Have more time with my patients, and (b) provide unique, individualized care.
What about labs and outside orders for care?
We can do some labs here. If labs are placed for outside facilities, some cash prices are available, but insurance could be utilized as well. For other orders that may be placed (MRIs, physical therapy, durable medical equipment, etc) you may still utilize your insurance to pay for these orders.
Doesn’t insurance negotiate a better price for me?
Not always. Typically these negotiated rates are still inflated to rates much higher than ours. Price transparency is very clear here. No suprise billing.
Help me understand how paying directly is better for me.
Overhead is less in a Direct Care setting. This can translate to a more efficient clinic. I think it makes for a happier podiatrist. I think a happier podiatrist can make for happier patients. : )
What if I have an FSA or HSA account?
Good news. We can accept this form of payment. You are paying for a healthcare expense.
Why aren’t more Doctor’s Offices doing business this way?
It is a growing movement. The Minnesota area alone has dozens of providers who think differently.
